Letter to the Library of Congress
July 31, 1995
Mr. James Hutson,
Chief Officer,
Manuscript Division
Library of Congress,
Washington, DC 20540
Dear Mr. Hutson:
We the undersigned have contributed in published writings to the historical
scholarship and scholarly debate on Sigmund Freud's life and work and the
history and epistemological status of psychoanalysis. As scholars working
independently of one another, with no common doctrinal commitment nor shared
institutional affiliation, we are all of us concerned that the Freud Exhibition
at the Library of Congress, scheduled for next year, should suitably portray
the present status of knowledge and adequately reflect the full spectrum
of informed opinion about the status of Freud's contribution to intellectual
history.
We therefore propose that Mr. Henry Cohen, a legislative attorney employed
by the American Law Division of the Congressional Research Service at the
Library of Congress, who in the past has earned the respect of several
among us for his conversance, probity and impartiality in the domain of
the contemporary discourse on Freud and psychoanalysis, be appointed to
the Committee instituted for the realization of the projected exhibition
in order to keep all of us apprised of the deliberations and developments
and, if and whenever appropriate, to represent our collective interest
and concerns. Mr. Cohen has himself consented to act on our behalf in just
such a capacity, and so we ask, please, t hat you direct to him for further
dissemination any response that you may have. Mr. Cohen can be addressed
at:
4328 Roland Springs Drive
Baltimore, MD 21210.
cc: Dr. James Billington, Librarian of Congress
